Assay Development Research Associate

 

Position Summary

The Research Associate is responsible for the planning and executing of laboratory experiments, and providing testing and analysis to support product development research initiatives. Investigates, creates and develops innovative methods, solutions and technologies for project advancement. Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses. Participates in scientific conferences and contributes to publications and patents. Participates in the ongoing maintenance of the BL-2 laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Integrates, analyzes, reviews, evaluates and interprets all available scientific data to effectively present conclusions in oral and written form.
• Assists in the development of new analysis methods.
• Participates in the patent application development process.
• Maintains research notebook
• Participates in other R&D or product development projects, as assigned
• Ensures compliance with BL-2 laboratory, regulatory and safety procedures. Evaluates new procedures for improved safety and/or compliance.
• Ensures conformity with OSHA regulations.
• Works closely with Scientists on lab maintenance
• Maintains current knowledge of microbiology through review of published literature, attendance at scientific meetings, and collaborating with internal and external resources.

Required Skills

• BS degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related fields plus 5+ years of relevant industrial/academic experience.
• Thorough & current understanding of the principles & concepts of molecular biology particularly as it applies to working with nucleic acids.
• Strong working knowledge of real-time PCR chemistry & instrument usage, especially TaqMan, isolating & purification of nucleic acids, cloning & gel electrophoresis.
• Must be able to work within a BL-2 facility handling a variety of human pathogens.
• Strong computer skills, with good working knowledge of MS Office. Preference given for direct experience using software for designing PCR assays.
• High level of creativity in solving complex problems and troubleshooting.
• Strong organizational, analytical, communication, presentation and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work in a small, collaborative environment independently, as well as with a team.
